WELCOME TO WARDROBE.
A twice-monthly(ish) dispatch dissecting fashion’s business and influence — blending personal anecdotes, cultural observations, and critical analysis on all things culture & commerce, style & styling.
Wait, who are you?
I’m Rebecca Jarrett. I am 25, currently living in Jersey City with my sister and working at ShopMy. In my past life, I played soccer at the University of Virginia and for the youth national team.
My writing style has always been pretty casual and highly referential (never met a quotation mark I didn’t like) — which felt like a natural fit for a blog-esque email newsletter (hyperlinks & cross references abound).
My approach to newsletter writing is also deeply informed by my Master’s program at the University of Virginia. While my thesis, THE DEVIL WEARS (AR-supported, blockchain-authenticated, sustainably-sourced) PRADA, explored something that felt new and shiny at the time, it was really just an of-the-moment repackaging of a conversation that is kind of always happening: fashion’s ever-evolving relationship with identity formation and signaling, the fight for brand integrity & IP control, environmental impact, and the unfailing allure of hype.
In the 1.5-ish years it took me to complete my degree, I devoted considerable time to screenshotting and scribbling notes on everything even tangentially related to fashion, futurity, trends, and commerce. Unfortunately, after hitting “submit” on UVA’s Online Archive of Scholarship, I not only stopped consistently documenting, but also got locked out of my @virginia.edu email — thereby killing my pseudo-critic meets wannabe editor archive of thoughts, pop culture moments, and quotes from people much smarter than me. Consider this a resurrection of that lost dossier.
What’s in it for me?
I have a couple of series that may be of interest to you.
THIRTEEN THINGS is an interview column where I ask questions on anything from objects and obsessions to oddly specific details to get a slice of what defines & influences our fashion internet favs. Guests include content creators, friends, editors, and cool people I come across and cold email.
THIS & THAT is a monthly news recap. I cover a range of things seen & heard, in & out, up & down all month alongside various discoveries (brands, collabs, and campaigns).
HOT or NOT. To participate in the polls, visit @wardrobethirteen on Instagram.
I also write various essays as the ideas strike (culture & commerce | style & styling). My goal is to make every email a valuable read for anyone interested in the fashion industry, the culture it exists in, trends it produces, and the people it flirts with.
Why would I pay for this?
W13 runs entirely on reader support. Doing this well takes time and scrolling research. Paid subscriptions help sustain that effort — so if you find value in here, consider chipping in. Annual subscriptions are only $35 (less than $3/mo).
All post are free for 6 months — meaning paid subscriptions are required to access the archives. So if you enjoy it, learn from it, and/or want to reference something later upgrade to paid. Plus! Yo'u’ll get good karma from supporting a (very) small independent publication.
If you're looking to get a feel for what Wardrobe Thirteen is all about, these pieces will give you a good sense.
Xo
